A laptop for study: what configuration a student actually needs

Choosing a laptop for the academic year: what's worth paying for and what isn't. With warranty and delivery in Tashkent.

The most common mistake at the start of the academic year is buying a student a laptop far more powerful — and expensive — than they need. Most coursework doesn't require a heavy configuration.

What most students actually need

The tasks: many browser tabs, Word and Excel, PDFs and presentations, online classes and video calls. None of this requires a powerful processor or a dedicated graphics card.

A sufficient configuration: 8–16GB RAM, 256–512GB SSD, a mid-tier processor, and a 14–16" Full HD screen.

That configuration usually sits in the lower and middle price range — there's no need to spend on powerful gaming machines.

What genuinely matters for a student

Battery life. Often more important than the processor. Power outlets aren't always available between classes. Models with lighter, power-efficient processors typically last noticeably longer.

Weight. For something carried in a bag every day, the difference between 2kg and less is real. A large 17" laptop is fine at home but awkward to carry daily.

Keyboard. If there's a lot of typing ahead, keyboard comfort and a backlight (for working in the evening) genuinely matter.

When a more powerful model is justified

Some fields really do need more:

  • Design, video editing, 3D — a dedicated GPU and at least 16GB RAM
  • Programming — 16GB RAM helps a lot (virtual machines, containers, IDEs)
  • Engineering software (AutoCAD and similar) — a dedicated GPU is required

If your field isn't on that list, there's no need to pay for extra power.

How to make the budget easier

Two practical routes:

  1. Choose a refurbished (C-REF) or open-box model — new-laptop quality at a noticeably lower price, with an official warranty.
  2. Instalments — through Alif Nasiya with no down payment, up to 24 months. A large expense at the start of the year becomes a small monthly payment.

The two can be combined: take a C-REF model on instalments.
