How to choose a gaming laptop: GPU, display and cooling

What actually matters in a gaming laptop: GPU model, VRAM, refresh rate and cooling. Options available in Tashkent.

Not everything in a gaming laptop matters equally. Here's what actually changes the result, in order.

1. The GPU comes first

Frame rate is determined mostly by the graphics card. Pay attention to the model number: an RTX 5060 is meaningfully faster than an RTX 5050. Don't shop on "has RTX" alone — the specific model is what matters.

VRAM matters too: 8GB is the comfortable floor for current games. With 6GB you'll be turning settings down in newer titles.

2. Refresh rate

On a 60Hz screen you will never see more than 60 frames per second, no matter how strong the GPU is. For gaming you want 120Hz or higher — it makes motion visibly smoother and gives a real advantage in fast games.

3. Processor — but not the fastest one

The CPU matters less than the GPU for games. A mid-tier processor paired with a strong graphics card beats the reverse. Put the budget into the GPU.

4. Cooling and noise

Frequently overlooked. A poorly cooled laptop heats up over a long session and automatically reduces its clock speeds (thermal throttling) — meaning even a powerful GPU stops performing at full capacity. Thicker gaming chassis usually sustain load better than thin ones.

5. Don't count on the battery

No gaming laptop runs at full performance on battery — you'll almost always need to be plugged in while playing. If you need portability and long battery life, that's a different class of machine.

In short

Allocate budget in this order: GPU first, then refresh rate, then RAM (16GB), and the processor last. Storage matters too — modern games take 50–100GB each, so 512GB is the minimum comfortable size.
